A considered country retreat among rolling meadows and old-growth cedar, designed for weekends that become seasons. The house is anchored by a generous hearth and framed views in every direction.
Built in 2016 by a Hudson-based practice, the plan borrows the proportions of an agricultural barn and little else. The great room rises the full height of the structure, with a blackened-steel fireplace at its centre and glazing on three sides. Materials are honest and few — reclaimed oak, lime plaster, hot-rolled steel.
Five bedrooms are split between the main house and a restored guest cottage at the edge of the orchard. A separate barn, insulated and serviced, currently works as a studio and would suit a gallery, a gymnasium or garaging for a collection.
Eighteen acres of meadow, orchard and woodland, with a spring-fed pond and roughly a mile of cut trail. Ninety minutes from Manhattan, and entirely out of sight of any road.
